But then again, just why do the mysterious Old Masters want Ebri to guard Melisande anyway? Just what is their purpose and aim?

Sadly it'll be quite a while before the truth of the Old Masters is revealed, especially considering that thus far most of the party doesn't even know they exist. Even Ebri, who is a Nephian and has seen Old Masters, only knows that they are very powerful beings who understand and seek to further the 'Purpose.' She's never talked to one though, not directly, tehy've only communicated through superior Nephians.
