(Hivemind) Rule Zero Day

Sheesh. That's a tough question. I was kind of hoping I could slide that one in there and not be questioned on it. It took me several minutes to write the original lost post, this one is taking longer.

OK. First off there is the necessary evil of levels. I know that there are level free systems out there, but they tend in my mind, to lead to abuse. Several of the characters from my novel don't fit well into DnD terms, and not necessariuly because they are too powerful. Sometimes its a question of having skills that the game does not normally allow. Characters in my novel are at once, weaker and more powerful than those found in a game.

Angel coming on soon....gotta finish this.

Another issue I have is in freeform actions, or times when the rules do not adequetly handle a situation, I may make a fast and dirty decision, allowing the action, and moving on with a higher than normal DC, only to be countered by rules lawyers arguing that its not in the rules.

I'll get back to you on this. I am seeing, in writing my post that it may be as much a part of my players, rather than the system for that last issue.

Gotta run, Angel.

Well, two points. With the skills you can always house rule a few extra skill points here and there to the classes that need them as well as give more class skills as you feel is needed. The DMG does have a varient on the class skills and giving bonus skill points is actually not that rare.

As for the rules lawyers I suggest violence. Now, I'm not a violent person. But Rules lawyers that ruin the game for the DM need to be dealt with in some way. The position of DM is a positiion that comes with a lot of trust. The players have to trust the DM to run a fair and fun game. If they do not (which I would say is the case with people who constantly rules lawyer) then they eitrher need to shape or or ship out.

Enjoy Angel. I don't get to watch it till 10pm, tommorrow night....sigh....

Before I regularly visited these boards my groups of the past had me convinced that I was the greatest game master to walk the earth. Now, I have come to the realization that I merely don't suck. That is how high a regard I hold for some of the rules savvy, or story savvy DMs on these boards.
sounds like a sig quote to me...:D

i, on the other hand, know i run very hot and cold -- and still have a lot to learn :)

LOL thanks.

I kinda want to write an article about nontraditional gaming sometime, maybe for the Emerald Nights mag. I'll run it by you first if I do, that cool? I'd like your input.

I like the violence suggestion. Yes....

If there's one thing I learned in my History classes, Violence is the answer :D
