When the Rijksmuseum was opened to the public for the first time in 1800 as the Nationale Konstgallerij (National Art Gallery), it was housed in the Huis ten Bosch in The Hague and the collection consisted primarily of paintings. In 1808 it moved to Amsterdam, where it was to be seen first in the Palace on Dam Square and later in the Trippenhuis on Kloveniersburgwal.
The present building came into use in 1885. At that point the Nederlandsch Museum voor Geschiedenis en Kunst (Netherlands Museum for History and Art), formerly in The Hague, was added to the Rijksmuseum, forming the basis for the collections of Dutch History and Sculpture and Applied Art.

Nope, not the oldest!!
Europe is much older that the us. amsterdam celebrated its 800 birthday a few years back!

I had a seriously nice weekend/ gaming convention in a castle last weekend,. That castle was first build in the 14th century.

Last week I was walking across a wall build by the ROMAN empire.

History is something different around here

But the rijksmuseum has a long history, ill see if there is some text about it ( in english)

Ooooo, gaming in a castle. I'll have to try that one day. Not many-o-those round these parts.

I bet we have something on that library in my library. I'll have to take a look on my lunch break...

And note: Bonus points for the Roman Empire.

Mornin' Hive. It's a very sunburnt little grim reaper this morning. I thought that there wasn't meant to be enough sun in this country to get burnt. Fortunately only first degree burns ... got myself some nice second degree burns in Oz just before I left.
