Need help guys, my last party didn't succeed in clearing a evil prison ( banewarrens) they died leaving a way out ( the key) on thier bodies inside. What would happen to the surrounding lands/city?

In other words, What woudl happen is unspeakable evil would be let loose in a city?

How powerful is the evil copared to the city? Is the evil trying to get out? Is the city prepared for something like this? Are there other heroes or adventures nearby?

BUT what could that party leed to in about 2 years?
The city originally had a severly weakened clergy, and only about half their army at home. They were also threatened on two sides.

REeally how bad could it be? All out evilness would attract retaliation by "the valiant forces of good" so thats not a option, but insidious "sneaky"evil would have a chance, only comming out when its strong enough.

The evil waqs plenty strong, about as strong as the adventures/heroes of the city. BUt they had two years to do their thing, and they have serious tools, and artifacts. (the collections of weapons/artifact and creatures in the banewarrens)

Right, depending on the size and nature of the evil, it could be anything between finding an appropriate opponent and going to town...
