Hobgoblins Ate My Daily!

Back when 4e first started, I thought the Hobgoblin racial power was great.

But it recently occurred to me. PCs can only have opportunities for "Save Ends" effects in one category of powers: Dailies.

Which means that the hobgoblins have a racial that basically lets them flip the bird to a PC wanting to use a daily to waste some hobgoblins. Which I think is a little much.

Succeed on a Nature check, and you know not to waste dailies with a save ends effect on hobgoblins.

Besides, eating up resources is what monsters do. Stunning monsters eat your turns. Wights eat your healing surges. Dominated Sorcerers eat your party's hit points. And purple worms eat you.

This might be one of those cases where it's better to miss with your daily (often the miss means the effect is "until the end of your next turn").

Even aside from the fact that there are also non-daily powers that have ongoing effects these days - I don't see an issue. On the other hand - if you don't use powers with ongoing effects, Hobgoblins have a totally useless power that won't help them in the least to survive against you.

Hobgoblins could use a different racial. It's far too easy to not come up at all, and when it comes up it's probably against the powers you'd just as soon they didn't avoid at all.

But that's safely into houserules territory. I'd suggest something like bumping a nearby ally's attack roll - maybe make them the inverse elf.

Hobgoblin Tactics (Immediate Interrupt, when an ally within 3 squares misses with an attack roll; encounter)
That ally may reroll the attack roll. The ally must use the second roll.

The elf's isn't an immediate action, so no reason not to make it a free or no action.

In any case, the daily will still do a lot of damage (usually) and may have other immediate effects not requiring a save (like prone). So, I think the concern about the hobgoblin is a nonissue.

I think the kobold shifty power is much more problematic. :)
