Hockey Question

That said, what they need to do now, is stop awarding points for the losers after reg time, who right now aren't the winners, but not quite losers, either.

I'm all for getting rid of the one point awarded for a OT loss, but if it goes to the shootout, both teams have earned their points.

While I don't mind the shootout too much, as they can be entertaining to watch, I get rather miffed by the change in stats. A while back I was watching a Anaheim/Pittsburgh game and the announcers were crowing about how Anaheim was setting the record for most consecutive points. Talk about a BFD moment. Given that you can lose in overtime these days and still get a point, the stat is utterly meaningless from a historical perspective.

I personally could have lived with just the 4 person overtime and ties, though I have always disliked the getting a point for losing in overtime.

Meh, the game evolves and records get broken. If you look at records from a historical perspective, then it's ok to suggest that Gretzky's points records are meanigless, because prior to the 1929/30 season, forward passes were outlawed.

Didn't know that. However there is at least a substancial body of work to compare Gretsky to. If he had done his thing in 1931 it would have been harder to compare historically. However getting excited over a point streak when it is much easier to maintain due to new rules seems silly to me. Give it ten years and there will be a basis for comparison.
