IRC using mIRC and a dice script.

the client: www.mirc.com
the script: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Shadowlands/2309/

There may be better dice scripts around, maybe someone can suggest a few.

The only feature missing from IRC that is almost necessary for 3.5 play is some sort of grid and moveable pieces for battles.

It is quite possible to create an advanced mIRC script for this to allow multiple players to connect to the DM and move their pieces around a virtual dungeon but it would take a very dedicated developer. I can only pray such a thing happens :)

Here is an example of a game created entirely in mIRC script/game called Tanks (basically a multi-player version of Scorched Earth), complete with it's own game server for multi-play, or just create your own private servers for you and your friends.

It shows the potential for such a D&D script, if someone would give it a try (it is well beyond me!)
