Haven't played it much in recent (er, like last 25) years. But I did play it about 2 years ago with my wife.

I'd told her about the game and she was fascinated by it. So one day, I bought her a copy as a present and we were able to get 6 player game going. She was out of the gate like a bolt, gas-lighting, making treaties, spreading rumours. She got the whole table against me. (I was the only one with prior experience so it wasn't hard to make me look like the bad guy. Also, I just have that sort of face.)

She didn't quite stick the landing with the sudden inevitable betrayal part of her strategy, tried to back stab too many people at once. Had the game gone on much longer she might have been driven back. But when we called it after about 4 hours of play she was in the lead and declared the winner.

Don't think I've ever been more turned on by her than that day.

I've enjoyed Diplomacy, both remote and in-person around a table. I first played it in high school and then a fair amount in college. I do find that I need to be in the mood for it these days.

A game with some similar dynamics is Republic of Rome because you've got an expressly political phase where you may need to raise troops, pass land bills to appease the people, or apportion concessions, all while players angle to be consul for life and the game directly works against the players by generating wars and disasters. If you like Diplomacy and you get a chance, check it out.

Republic of Rome is a brilliant game. Never managed to finish a full game alas.

My wife will play Risk 2210.

She's not confident vs me on the land. Guess who gets to wear the nukes?
