Hold the Line--worth it?

Zaruthustran

The tingling means it’s working!
I've got a 1 ranger/ 1 rogue with Combat Reflexes, and I'm thinking of picking up Hold the Line at third level. Is this feat worth it? Seems like a free AoO on anyone who charges you could be pretty useful, but I want to hear other opinions.

Stats:
16 Str, 16 Dex, 10 Con, 12 Int, 12 Wis, 8 Cha. Wood Elf. Carries a longspear, rapier, large shield, spiked chain shirt. Starts fights with Longspear, then once enemies close he switches to shield and dual wield of rapier + armor spikes.

It would depend entirely on whether you get charged on a regular basis.

If you can get your Speed up to 40... then you hit once and back up... they have to charge to reach you. Just a thought.

i really like Hold the Line, but it's situation-dependant. if noone charges you, you don't get use out of this feat.

if your PC is switching from a longspear to sword-and-shield, you may want to consider quick draw :)

Hi Mr Fidgit!
Just thought I'd say hello to the only other I have seen to quote such a fine movie ;-)

As for hold the line, I think it's a waste of feat for a low level character, as there are many other feats that will get more use. For higher levels though, it may be a good choice.

Unless you had spring attack you'd be generating an AoO on yourself with that maneuver.

As long as all you do is move your speed, then you wouldn't provoke an AOO. Definately a good feat for a barb in that instance.

thanks ogre! :D

"Oh Benson, dear Benson, you are so mercifully free of the ravages of intelligence."

(i used to know the entire
evil speech by heart...:) )

But you'd be giving up an attack on the off chance that an opponent would charge you to grant a AoO. This is especially weak since he's losing his multiple attacks from his dual wielding.

edit, misread Stalker0's post so I changed mine

Since you use a Long Spear initially, you're already getting an AoO when targets approach you. I wouldn't bother with this feat. You may want to start thinking of things like Power Attack or Dodge to start some feat chains. I'm not a fan of Cleave, but a lot of ppl like it. If you want to start the dodge chain you can get Spring Attack, which can be quite useful for your fighting style.

As another poster mentioned, you may want quick draw when you hit level 6 so that you can change weapons without losing an attack. Also, you could take Expert Tactitian since you already have the prereq.

Hold the Line is a very solid feat for a character that intends to hold his ground on the battle line. Such characters make obvious targets and tend to attract charging enemies.

A Ranger/Rogue is more likely to get advantage from Quickdraw or Expert Tact, as already suggested. Your offense is solid and flexible, but you AC is a little soft; so staying still isn't a great idea.
