Holy Blightfire Batman!

So I was reading the ELH and came acrose lava wights and their blightfire. Ouch, lose 4 hp permanently that cannot ever be replaced? That seems insane to me. Any fighter/melee/sucker who happens to get surprised by one of these things for even one round before he can get away will regret it for the rest of his career. It is a mean ability at face value but throw in the fact that you are permanently screwed after that just blows me away.

Have any other folks used these creatures in their campaigns? How did your PCs deal with the inevitable crippling after-effects?

My party has yet to face laa wights (although they will eventually, since they freed seven of them from a devil's tome of contracts in the prior campaign). Those lava wights formed a new constellation as they looked down on the world to plan their conquest.

I plan to allow both Miracle and Wish to replace the lost hit points, with a 5,000xp cost attached of course.

The freeing of the lava wights from the tome was quite an interesting encounter (one of the funnest we've ever ran). The Devil Attorney (son of Asmodeus and the ultimate lawyer) was a blast to run as a GM.

I'm saying all that just to say "go read my story hour." The second one in my sig (that ended in a TPK) is the one with the lawyer.

Well, the one where all of that happened has already turned out: as a TPK. They went in over their heads undermanned and unbuffed against a demi-lich and the entire party was wiped out.

The second story hour is the one where they are dealing with the repercussions as another party. They haven't even gotten to the point where they know about the lava wights or Acererak yet. :D
