Umm... what 1st Edition AD&D are you talking about? The one I played allowed Neutral clerics.

Maybe you are thinking of a house rule?

I think perhaps he ment true neutral, since as I remember clerics could not be true neutral in 1st addition...that was the druids area.

Clerics in 1E could be any alignment except True Neutral.
