D&D (2024) Homebrew Tool Proficiencies

Eubani

Legend
I do not believe I am the only person that believes there are many missing things that would be expressed as tool proficiencies. This impacts upon Characters do things in game that they want to be a part of their character ability set and it impacts upon background design I have discovered. So let us see what people have cooked up and what we think of them.

Tarot Cards - Wisdom or Charisma
You understand the standard meanings of each card and the different lay outs and how that effects the meanings. The veracity of card readings whether it's a cold reading of a person, random chance or a glimpse beyond is up the DM.

Mining Tools Strength or Constitution
You know how safely operate mining equipment safely and effectively on the confines of a mine. You know dangers that can be found in a mine and the signs of where is a good place to mine

Conductors Baton Intelligence or Wisdom
You can effectively lead a band of musicians be they singers or instrumentalist

Cleaning Supplies Dexterity
You can use cleaning tools to effectively and efficiently clean items and surfaces. You know the best substances and temperatures to use on what.

Interesting questions! There's no right or wrong answer here but this is what I'd do:

I would just lump Mining Tools in with Masons Tools, they're aren't exactly the same but close enough that I wouldn't make a new proficiency. Mason's Tools are Strength but I homebrew them to Str/Con (your pick) because that's what I think makes more sense

I'd also lump Tailors Tools in with Weavers Tools, that seems like it's intended to cover the same scope. Weavers Tools are Dex in the PHB although I use Int/Dex (your pick)

I'd treat Conductors Baton the same way music instruments work, Charisma Performance roll if you were leading NPCs, or if you were teaming with other PCs then just have it be the Help Action on their performance roll

Tarot cards I'd go with the same thing as Gaming Sets.

Cleaning Supplies, honestly I wouldn't bother when Prestidigitation exists as a cantrip. But yeah Dex makes sense if you were adding them.

Tailors Tools
You can use the tools required to measure, make and adjust clothing.

Mount - Wisdom or Dexterity
You are knowledgeable and capable with a Mount of your choice:
Riding Horse, Draft Horse, Camel, Elephant, Mastiff, Mule, Pony, Warhorse, or an other Mount that you and your DM agree on, such as a Hippogriffon in a Gray Elf culture.

Vehicle - Wisdom or Dexterity
You are knowledgeable and capable with a Vehicle of your choice:
Airship, Galley, Keelboat, Longship, Rowboat, Sailing Ship, Warship, or an other Vehicle that you and your DM agree on, such as a Horseless Carriage.

My only problem with this is that it's a nerf: the game already assumes everyone can ride a horse or similarly common mount. Before the rise of cars this skill was pretty ubiquitous.

I can it for exotic or flying mounts, but that creates other problems since if you don't take them at character creation new tool proficiencies can have a large opportunity cost.

This doesn't already exist? It was a thing in the 2014 books.
