Homebrewed Wall Spells

I hoven't ever designed one, but this thread has inspired me to wonder, is there room in an Oriental Adventures campaign, what with its taint and all, for a Wall of Silk spell?

Wow, I'm so glad I started this thread! I've never considered the issues that you guys have brought up re: wall of hate.

Let's go through them and modify/edit the spell...

Wall of Hatred should be Enchantment [mind-affecting] I think. It may seem to create a wall but really it is creating an area of mental effect that happens to be wall shaped.

Hmm, you're right. I'll change that...

Do you still take charisma damage from a Wall of Hate if you make the save?

That was my original intent; however, I've re-evaluated it in light of your comment about barbarians. The save penalty stays, on the other hand.

And does that -4 penalty to saving throws come before, or after the will save?

After- you make the save before you enter the wall of hate. I've re-worded the spell somewhat for clarity. Thanks to all you guys for helping me shore it up!

Here's the revised wall of hate spell.

WALL OF HATE
Enchantment [Mind-Affecting]
Level: Brd 4, Sor/Wiz 5
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Medium (100’+10’/level)
Effect: Wall whose area is up to one 10’ square per level
Duration: 1 minute/level
Saving Throw: See text
Spell Resistance: Yes

A wall of hate spell creates a glaring wall of reddish-orange light. Living creatures with intelligence scores must make Will saves to approach with 5’ of it. The wall does not obscure vision or impair movement, but affected creatures must make a second Will save to enter and cross through the wall. Upon crossing the victim suffers 1d6 points of Charisma damage. While in the wall of hate and for one full round thereafter, creatures suffer a -4 circumstance penalty to all saving throws.

Wall spells, wall spells... here are a few of ours...

Krevik's wall of souls (creates a wall of spirits; anything that dies near the wall has its soul drawn into it for the duration of the spell);

Wall of shadows;

Wall of mirrors;

Wall of smoke;

Wall of vines (thick woody vines; can also grab anyone nearby);

Wall of wood;

Zubeck's wall of bones

Would you mind posting the full versions? I'd be interested to see 'em. :)

I actually have a 2e version of a wall of shadows too.

One more question Re Wall of Hate. You say that the character must make a second save to cross.

And then, give the consequences for being in the wall and passing through it, if you don't make you second save. Which is it? You pass, save or not, and the save just determines the amount of damage you take, or you pass of not depending on your save, but if you fail the save, you don't cross, and don't take any damage. Or, you pass into, fail the save, and get stuck there?

The way he's rewritten in, you never take the full damage from the wall, unless, I suppose, you're physically thrown through it against your will. Because when you fail the 2nd save, you simply don't pass through.

The rewritten version you make

Save #1: to see if you can pass through the wall
Save #2: To reduce the CHR damage to half.
