Honest Evaluation of the Digital Pre Alpha stuff?

Yeah, I know it is a pretty good package deal. But I spent a HUGE amount of $$$ on a social worker's salary on 3.0/3.5. I could continue with that ruleset and be happy for quite awhile. In order to play 4.0 I would be looking at paying a monthly fee for the digital stuff, book prices, and the occasional mini purchase... That adds up awful fast (which is clearly what WoTC is betting on).
So my response to WoTC is, "I may be interested---but only if the Digital apps DEEPLY impress me."

Movement on the VGT will show a distance marker. So you will always know how far your character has moved.

Here's what I want to know: Is there an option to set the distance marker to "realistic distances?" In other words, instead of counting off movement square by square like a board game, have it figure out the actual distance and then round to the nearest number of squares?

This would make me very happy. After all, the only reason we have 1-1-1 movement (and for that matter 1-2-1 movement) is to provide a quick approximation so that the game is not slowed down by the effort to calculate realistic distances. With the VTT, though, the computer could do the number-crunching for us.

While I get the sneaking feeling that I'll subscribe to DDI, it won't be for the game table. It will be for all the other content it provides. My players will likely not subscribe, and we will continue to use Fantasy Grounds for gaming. My hope is that someone will develop a character sheet for Fantasy Grounds that is 4E compatible... I bet that will happen. Rules for 4E inside FG might be a different story thanks to the new license.

I can see myself signing up. There is a chap in our group that buys everything published by WotC, if he continues to do that for 4E then his books will make a great table reference, and online I can still access all the rules content via the database if a subscriber. Dragon, Dungeon and all the other stuff for £5 a month is cheaper than trying to keep up with buying every book.

Those videos demonstrate a much cleaner and more mature product than the commentary has led me to believe. I'm much more interested in the virtual table than I have been until now.

So...any word on the strength of the PC needed to run this? Graphics cards, RAM, hard drive space, etc? Minimum requirements? My computer is a piece of ******
