Horrible joke in the original Matrix...

I just caught this after watching through the movie again with subtitles...I like to throw subs on movies when I'm doing other things just in case I can't hear.
When Cypher is in the place eating the steak with Agent Smith, Smith calls him "Mr. Reagan."...then Cypher says he wants to come back as "Someone important...an actor."
This is the first time I caught this...its great. :D

Never caught the Reagan part, heh. :)

My take on it was that the character wanted to go back in as an actor. So here he was, an actor on the big screen, leading the audience to believe that they truly are in the matrix themselves.

The gag works on many levels.

Matrix:Reloaded had some similar immature people-I-don't-agree-with-are-demonic political easter eggs. In the scene with the Architect, the screens showing the greatest evils of humanity pictured both Presidents Bush and Ariel Sharon.

Could it be that Cypher's real, Matrix name was Reagan, or some variant that sounds similar. It's hardly a rare name.

Well, unless Cypher is based on an *actual* person, it's only reasonable to expect that the Wachowski's had to invent his name.

It's their *choice* that indicates their particular spin.

Funny? For some.

Not funny, and kinda lame? For others (including myself).

That's what you get from screamin' lefties.

Let's see... yep, I think that's a new record for number of posts before a thread goes OT into political diatribes. :D
