Horror Reborn Template
A horror reborn is a monstrous creature formed when an evil power reincarnates the soul of one of its followers into a new form so that the follower remains useful.
Unlike a normal creature of its type, a horror reborn is frighteningly difficult to truly kill. Each horror reborn can only be permanently slain by a particular method known as its True Death. The exact requirements to inflict True Death vary from horror reborn to horror reborn. For example, one may experience True Death when dismembered by a silver axe while another's True Death requires being anointed with the tears of an infant. A horror reborn appears as a more powerful, more terrifying example of whatever sort of creature it is.
Creating a Horror Reborn
"Horror reborn" is a template that can be added to any creature that possesses an Intelligence score and any spell-like or supernatural abilities (referred to hereafter as the "creature"). The creature's type remains unchanged. It uses all of the creature's statistics except as noted below.
Hit Dice: Increase by 50% or to at least 1 HD. The increase in HD may result in an increase in size based on the creature's normal advancement. Refer to MM, pages 12 and 14, for affects of size changes.
Speed: Increase highest speed by 10 ft. For example, the speed of a horror reborn chimera (normal speed 30 ft., fly 50 ft.) is 30 ft., fly 60 ft.
AC: Add a +2 profane bonus.
Attacks: The increases to HD and ability scores affect attack bonuses accordingly.
Damage: The increase to Strength affects damage bonuses accordingly.
Special Attacks: The creature retains all special attacks of the base creature and also gains the following ability.
Power of Fear (Su): Once per day, a horror reborn can unleash a blast of pure fear that affects creatures within a 20-foot radius. Each creature caught in the radius must make a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 the creature's extra HD + the creature's Charisma modifier). Those that fail are shaken for 2d4 rounds. For each creature affected by the fear, the horror reborn gains 5 temporary hit points.
Special Qualities: The creature retains all special qualities of the base creature. If it did not already have 60-foot darkvision, the creature acquires it. The creature also gains the following supernatural ability.
True Death (Su): A horror reborn can only be truly slain by means of its True Death. Otherwise no matter what is done to it in order to kill it, the horror reborn reforms in 1d3 days within 10d10 yards of the site of its defeat. When it reforms, the horror reborn regains its full hit points and heals any and all other forms of damage that may have been inflicted upon it. It retains memory of its defeat, and the horror reborn is likely to seek revenge.
Saves: The increases to HD and ability scores affect saves accordingly.
Abilities: Increase Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution by +2 each. A creature that does not have Constitution ignores the modifier to that ability score. A minimum score of 8 applies to both Intelligence and Wisdom. Minimum Charisma score for a horror reborn is 13.
Skills: The increase in HD probably grants additional skill points.
Feats: The increase in HD could grant additional feats.
Organization: Solitary
Challenge Rating: After increasing HD, up to 3 HD: as creature +1; 4-7 HD: as creature +2; 8 or more HD: as creature +3.
Treasure: Standard.
Alignment: Always evil (any).
Advancement: None. Each horror reborn is a unique creature with a fixed nature.
