Horse nomads

BiggusGeekus

That's Latin for "cool"
Hello all.

I want to learn about nomads who ride horses. American. Mongolian. Arabian. Whatever. Put a bunch of sociopaths on a rabid ton of angry muscle and I want to know about it. Books. Websites. Games. I don't care. I just want to be smart about this topic.

Thanks!

Biggus Geekus,

Look into Russian history regarding the "Cossacks". Not perfectly nomadish, but they were the true horsemen.

We've got a short PDF about a barbarian tribe along those lines. Part of our HORDES series:

And only $2.50! I'll pick it up tomorrow when I'm on my work machine.

And thanks to you as well Turjan. I didn't know that was freely available.

As well,

Hunt down a vhs copy of "The Black Stallion 2" which deals with that protagonist equine's history and home in Arab lands. It's a good look into true horse culture. Neat race at the end too.

You're... kidding, right? I happened to see that recently and it's about as faithful to Bedouin culture as the Flintstones are to the neolithic. I mean, it's not bad as 1980s young adult horse films go, but National Geographic, it ain't.

Hey BG;

1. Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire - it's short, it's cheap (cover: 12.95), and it's full of illustrations and references. By Jean-Paul Roux, published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc.
2. A Short History of Bysantium - touches on the hordes as seen from the western view - by John Julius Norwich, published by Vintage Press.

There's more, but I'll have to paw through my reference shelf to find them. Did this same research for a new world a couple of years ago :).

Good luck,
Don.

"Warriors of the Steppe" by Erik Hildinger -- Mongols

"The Fighting Cheyennes" by George Bird Grinnell

"Tribal Wars of the Southern Plains" by Stan Hoig -- Plains Indians

The Devil's Horsemen is a pretty good work on the Mongol progress through towards Europe and why it didn't work very well for anyone involved, though better for the Mongols than everyone else.

Well, except for the Venetians, it was absolutely wonderful for them.
