House of Dragons vs. Rings of Power (and a touch of Wheel of Time)

The Perrin changes are pretty unforgiveable, since theybmiss the entire point yhwt the PTSD thwt haunts Perrin throughout the series was the justifiable combat slaying of two enemies trying to kill him and his friends...but that messed him up. Making it about accidentally murdering his wife? So weird.
So I equally hated it at first but on second run through I’ve mellowed.

I think they were trying to create the ‘fear of causing harm’ part to Perrin. The savagery losing control that he has to keep in check. Plus it made the Way of the Leaf sections more poweful. I don’t think it was necessary in the long run but I also don’t think it did any harm. Will be interesting to see what they do with the Two Rivers parts as the Wolf Dream really hasn’t been much of a thing up to now.

I havent read the books so I dont understand. All I know is he was my favorite character and then he was gone.
Yeah he’s a fun character. Though he disappears in the books too. As far as we know he’s dead. Killed by a Myrdraal in the farmhouse episode 3 I think.

In Book 1, he was Rand and Mat's mentor who taught them the way of the world and how to travel. Them he comes back latter and is awesome. They might bring back the awesome part?

And just like...the time spent on that could have been spent on stuff that actually happened in the books. Hell, not aging them up, not making Lan and Morraine lovers, not making the Cauthon family completely messed up, etc, would have allowed for more character development and a better season 1.
Where the hell did Thom go?
I stopped watching in season 1, so i don't know. But in the books he plays the harp, and his cloak is colorful and patchwork, and he has a long mustache, and he is important and awesome.
I think he’ll return in Tear which is the point he really starts to do stuff. He’s obviously been downgraded as a character. Understandable.
Not understandable at all. Just don't adapt the damn story if you can't do so without ruining characters and also adding weird random crap to the story.

Completely redundant. That is accomplished just fine in the book, without having him accidentally murder a loved one.

It's also just worse storytelling. It changes the point. Not wanting to give in to violence even against actual enemies is vastly different than having PSTD from that time you freaked out and accidentally gutted your wife with an axe.

For me, the fundamentally sad thing about the show is that it is not at all a story about the experience of fighting in Vietnam...when the books are as much about rhe horrors of the Vietnam War experience juat as much as LotR is about WWI.

It also isn't really a story whose core is hope, which the books are.

The show just fundamentally doesn't understand the heart of the story or it's characters on pretty much any level.

It has circa 2750 named characters across hundreds of hours of text. Frankly someone was gonna get cut. Understandable that it’s Thom on the basis that his main role in the early books is to prepare them for a journey in a series where there obviously isn’t time for an extended hours long journey. Instead he gives them some advice and then saves them from Myrdraal.

I’m not sure what point he would have had in Cairhain given that it combines Rands explorations in Great Hunt mixed with Rands solo self exploration from Dragon Reborn. What useful role would you have had him play? He has no role to play in the waste and he wouldn’t be caught dead in the tower. So when I say it’s understandable that he shows back up in Tear that’s what I mean. Understandable.

We aren’t reading a book. We’re watching TV. Show don’t tell. Presumable there wasn’t time to show
Perrin repeatedly tripping over his feet and breaking crockery. It does nothing to damage Perrins credibility and does a lot to convey his fears and insecurity. It does no harm and takes about 30 seconds of screen time.

I disagree. Your explanation doesn’t make sense. He’s scared of what he will do in the heat of
Battle or in anger. It’s no more complicated than that. It’s the core of Perrins character that he still
fights reluctantly despite that.

You don’t like the show. I get it. Don’t worry you can always enjoy the Billy
Zane version of Wheel of Time. No one is taking that away from you.
