Neil Gaiman, and I'm sure many other writers, are always happy to point out that the original stories are still there, unchanged*.

If you think that he changes made in the LotR movies (and there were some, major and minor that the merit of could be debated) were anywhere near the same scale and effect than I really can't even say we're in the same universe. There's really nothing to say here.

If you are unfamiliar with Tolkien and want to know what the is different from Tolkien in RoP: pretty much everything. Only a few character names and place names are used.

As a Tolkien novice, what exactly does RoP do to the lore and setting?

The less you have read, the more you will like the series. Same applies if all you have done is watch the movies. If you only know The Hobbit and LotR books/movies, you will not know a lot of the stuff that was messed up. I have read enough of the other books, Silmarillion etc, that I had to pretend the show was a generic fantasy series very loosely based on Tolkien to enjoy it enough to watch the whole season.

Every person's experience will vary, but I liked Rings of Power just fine and I've read and re-read Tolkien many times. LOTR, Hobbit, Silmarillion, Children of Huron, Unfinished Tales, Letters, Nature of Middle-Earth, you name it.

Having now watched the same amount of each, I am definitely coming down in favor of "House of the Dragon." The gore and sex are a little more graphic than I'd prefer, but that was to be expected; and the acting and the characters are so much more vivid than "Rings of Power."

Of course, it probably helps that the people making the show can (and do) talk to the guy who actually wrote the books. I can only imagine what "Rings of Power" would have been like if J.R.R. Tolkien had been available to consult on it.

I enjoyed them both, but I thought HotD was a LOT better; tons better, especially in the writing and acting. Paddy Considine is going to win an Emmy for his portrayal of Viserys. Nobody on RoP is going to be nominated for one.

RoP had to pull out a big battle and Orodruin exploding to really heat up. HotD got a greater level of engagement from showing a dinner party.

My wife (who hasn't read any Tolkien, but has seen all the Jackson movies) and I enjoyed it just about equally. So I don't think there's any correlation here.

Exactly. I was going to say exactly this.

Paddy Considine did such a great job with his performance. It could've easily been a "Viserys blunder of the week" each episode," but he brought nuance and humanity to the character.

No one else on HoD is going to be nominated for one, either, though. Paddy had, by far, the best written and most substantive part and acted the hell out of it. He ran circles around everyone else on both shows.
