How about a monk mercenary?

Purely in terms of alignment, it's allowed I guess. But it feels out of character for a monk, which is meant to be the nearest thing to a PC choice for asceticism, to be a mercenary for pay, the epitome of materialism.

Not necessarily.

He could see the mercenary path as the best way to demonstrate his school's path is superior...all while raising money. Said $$$ could be split between what he feels he needs to live on and the causes he espouses: some to his monestery, some to the orphanage he lived in, some to save stray puppies, whatever.

Because "Evil" doesn't have to mean misanthropic & selfish in all acts. RW psychopaths have been known to serve their communities, even if it's just as a cover for their true nature.

(Had a law prof once who was jovial & friendly as you can imagine...until you upstaged him. Then he was your enemy unti he got even.)

By monk, do you mean holy man or martial artist? Because the 3.5 class that goes by the name is one, but not necessarily the other.

Even modern monks do things for money: make beer or cheese, educate, write books, give speeches for honoraria, put on globe-spanning travelling shows...

He doesn't have to do it for the money.

Experience is a good pay too.

You know that building and maintaining a monastery is expensive, right? Mercenary work may be a good way to get fundage. Cheddar. Dinero. Benjamins.

Speaking of monasteries, anyone can tell me the name of that sourcebook about strongholds and outposts and all that stuff?

I remember there was a map for a monastery, some kind of bridge outpost, an elven tree fortress, an arena, a monastery, a bailey catle, etc...?
