How about a Pirates of Dark Water RPG?

Dragonblade

Adventurer
I was reminded of this show by a thread over at rpg.net.

This was a killer show and I always thought the setting would have made for a great RPG, especially a d20 one. :)

Anyone else remember that show?

For those who aren't familiar with it, it was about a boy named "Ren" (I think) and he traveled with an old experienced warrior/pirate and girl who was an ecomancer (like a sort of Sorcerer/Druid) and strange monkey-bird. The world was mostly ocean with tons of islands, so there was a very cool Pirates of the Caribbean feel to it but it also had a cool fantasy feel as well.

Lots of different races and cultures, cool fantasy ship design, cool monsters, different types of magic and an interesting meta-plot about the Dark Water. The Dark Water was this foul, evil liquid from this nether realm that had seeped into the real world and was slowly polluting and killing the planet. Dark Water was like oil in substance and floated in patches on the Ocean. It corrupted or devoured whatever it touched.

The main hero, Ren, was searching for these magical crystals that had the power to destroy the Dark Water.

*sigh* It was a bit before my time (I'm 15 now) but I do have some vague memories from when it was an old rerun show. I really wish I could get my hands on the series, as I can no longer remember anything about it.

Yes, a d20 version would be nice -- if you can, please make it. I'd help, but, like I said, it's only a distant memory to me.

I'd make it in a heartbeat had I the funds. I remember quite a bit about it though am fuzzy on the details. I think I saw almost every episode back in the days when it was on TV.

I would love to get my hands on the story and production notes probably stored away in some vault at Hanna-Barbera's office and could probably put together a pretty good game out of it.

Well, if any publisher reads this and would like to do it, then excellent! :)

Better yet, I'll even write it for you if you'd help me get the license. :)

Ah, fun show :) I have part of that generation gap but I still have clear memories about it.

There was another hero named Ioz I think who was more of a fighter and I think the magician girl's name was Tula. The Dark Water itself had some malign entity behind it who also had a tentacled servant who was just plain nasty (enervation or something similar DnD stat wise on his tentacle attacks).

They also have a Sega genesis game based off of the show that I have buried somewhrere...

Oddly enough, theres plenty of dark water in my current campaign setting.

I always loved that old show, it was good quality.

The enemy ship was a death hulk.

*sigh*

the cartoons when I was a kid were so much better than they are today. Sorry spongebob.

Does anyone remember the Conan cartoon show?

Yes and it was terrible! the real question is does anyone remember Mightor?

As to Pirates of Darkwater it was way cool and I based one of my main villains - the Liche Pirate Lord Vulgus on the Pirates of Darkwater villain 'Bloth'

and the Monkey-Birds name was Niddler and Bloths sidekick was called Konk

Great show, it was running on cartoon network over here in germany for a while, so I think they have the rights to now, or maybe just a contract to run...The Treasures of Rule would make a great many-parted artifact adventure for any game. Each piece had a power with the coimpass to point the way. The ships and world itself were very engaging, I could easily envision this as game world or portion thereof, with alot of exploration. Kind of like Earthsea in many ways, just a little more grim...

Cartoon Network is ownd by Time Warner who owns Hanna-Barbera so they have the rights no contract needed.

I used to work for Warner Brothers and met/worked with a lot of the really good animators (many now passed on :( ) But a license from TW I think would be very hard to do and furthermore may not be profitable depending on how much money it cost to acquire that said license.

Now after saying that I will be happy to see if any of my old buds are there and have ever heard of them offering this.

We could do my favorite: Hong Kong Phooey d20 :D
