How are you allowing players to take exalted feats?

A discussion came up in our game about a 1st level character having exalted feats? Would this be possible according to the BoED?

It says at the beginning of the feats chapter that exalted feats require, among other things like a high moral standard etc, intervention of a deity (IIRC, I don't have tyhe book in front of me). However, a player rightly pointed out that any first level cleric has spells also as a result of deity intervention.

I had interpreted the above mentioned section of the BoED to mean that the character had to earn the exalted feat and win favor of their deity. How do other DMs play it?

This is for Britannia 3E:

For each virtue you gain partial avatarhood in, you can take another feat from the BoED. There are 8 virtues so there's a limit of eight such feats per character, but that should be enough for anybody. A similar limit applies for spells from the BoED: every partial avatarhood you gain gives you access to another level of spells. This means you can get up to 8th level BoED spells, which is fine, since I ditched 9th level spells IMC.

At the moment, every PC has partial avatarhood in at least one virtue. They're almost 12th level, so it'll be interesting to see which characters, if any, choose to take BoED feats.

I would just let the player take them, assuming he can come up with a reason. Perhaps he is descended from a saint and its in his bloodline. And of course, if he can't come up with a reason, the GM can always com up with one for him, and then work it into the story when least expected. :)

And you can always strip it from them if they aren't acting in an exalted way right?
