  • Badly. At least one of them is fit for nothing but kindling at this point. It's all fallen apart!

I voted that they are holding up, but not for long.

There is NOTHING wrong with the binding, but I tend to open the PHB and MM at least three times each day. NO BOOK is designed to handle that kind of abuse. I'd say the PHB gets laid out flat on my work desk or gaming table at least 20 times in a week.

The PHB is DEFINITELY in hard shape, and the MM is starting to show signs of abuse too. The DMG is faring much better - mainly because I use the Tome & Blood magic item creation addendum which means I only ever use the DMG when actually running a game, not when writing.

I have a first and second printing of the PHB, one MM and one DMG. The first printing PHB has been on long term loan to one of my players, who is rougher on books than I am. It's a bit scuffed, but fine. The second printing, the MM and the DMG look as good as the day I purchased them. But then, I'm very careful with books.

My 1st printing PHB sees daily use, but still looks fine. The DMG sees biweekly use at most, and also looks fine. The MM I use rarely, maybe once ot twice a month tops (I dislike using monsters as opponents, and I rarely have more than one combat per session), therefore it is in good condition.

Then again, I am very careful with books.

My PHB is definitely getting shaky - the other two core books are fine.

I miss the old days - I've got a 1e DMG with the efreeti cover that seems practically indestructible. I've even taken it camping without a problem. I must have had it for 20 years and it's in better shape than my PHB. Well, in terms of the binding anyway - not in terms of the peanut butter stains on the pages, the battered cover corners, the unidentified stuff wedged between the pages...

For the use I give them, my 3rd edition core books are holding up well. But I swear my 1st edition books could survive a Nuclear Holocaust, The Gamma World era, and an Orc Invasion.

*ponders if they would make good armor, rather then a Kevlar Vest, have a Rules Jacket*

A good point. Amongst an old circle of friends, beat up books were generally thought of as being a status symbol. The term "well-used" usually went with it, and it was thought that this is the way a good game book should look.

Of course, we were sixteen at the time, but it hope it has *some* relevance.

I'm exactly in the same boat.
