How can my wizard find out what happened

welby

First Post
Here's the scenario. The big dumb half-orc was carrying around an special necro item that my necromancer wanted to possess. One day, I asked about it, and the when the half-orc looked for it to show it to me, it was gone. I know that it was there a week ago, but I have no idea where it is now. I'm still fairly low level, but I've promised the half-orc I would find out what happened one day.

Help me figure out a way to find out what happened to it, at the lowest level possible. All additional source materials are allowed, provided they aren't overtly broken.

OOC, I know that it was stolen in the night by our party's rogue and sold to a traveling merchant who we camped with one night. At first I came up with using a detect thoughts spell, but then I realized, I have no reason to suspect the rogue at this point.

Be very careful about metagaming here. Some spells that are appropriate to try are: Locate Object (2nd), Contact Other Plane (5th), Divination (4th - get a Cleric to cast it for you).

agreed...have to be very careful about this.

I know my character had a strong desire to find out what happened, even before I knew what happened OOC. Thus, I feel ok about moving forward with this.

I was just surprised when I was looking for ways to figure out what happened, the only option I felt comfortable with was an 8th level spell that'll tell me where that object currently is. But even that won't tell me how it got there, and by the time I can access 8th level spells, who will care about the item.

not a very elegant solution, but at your level you could cast locate object about twice a day or more, just every now and then to see if it is within range. 'Eventually' you are bound to find it right? ;)

Or at least that is something to do until you hit 9th and get real options like 'contact outer plane'. Dangerous, but not overly so (well, maybe it is, since you have a backstabbing thief in the party).

Also, as you know what the answer is ahead of time, you have plenty of time to plan out what your character would do in this circumstance. Personally, I prefer either geas or animating their dead body ;)

death is inevitable for any character that chooses to steal from the party. Good idea animating him afterwards Scion.

Divination is a good one. Ask "what happened to item X", and the likely answer will come back with something alluding to a friend or ally selling it for personal profit.

Next up - scry includes a will save bonus for someone with whom you have NO knowledge, but have some sort of connection to. "The guy who currently has this item" is probably a good one. After that, you can use message or something to conduct a conversation.

You're a necro? Kill the rogue and take him as skeleton warrior instead of familiar as the variant necromancer in UA ;)

I'd suggest you go to a cleric of your god (Wee Jas? Nerull? Vecna?) and either pay or somehow convince the cleric to cast Commune for you. The lower the cleric's level, the cheaper the price, though you also get fewer questions that way. Still, it doesn't take that long to quickly narrow down the field by asking about obvious ways the object might have disappeared.

The obvious place to start: Was the object stolen?

Yes.

Then, considering that you know when you last saw it and when it was definitely gone, you can narrow down the list of suspects to people the party came across during that time. After they've been eliminated...

Was the object stolen by a party member?

Yes.

From there, the suspicion is likely to fall squarely on the rogue.

Did the rogue steal the object?

Yes.

And there you have it.
