D&D Beyond has announced how the transition to the new 2024 edition will work on the platform, and how legacy access to the 2014 version of D&D will be implemented.
  • You will still be able to access the 2014 Basic Rules and core rulebooks.
  • You will still be able to make characters using the 2014 Player's Handbook.
  • Existing home-brew content will not be impacted.
  • These 2014 rules will be accessible and will be marked with a 'legacy' badge: classes, subclasses, species, backgrounds, feats, monsters.
  • Tooltips will reflect the 2024 rules.
  • Monster stat blocks will be updated to 2024.
  • There will be terminology changes (Heroic Inspiration, Species, etc.)

And it shouldn't be. It should be treated as a collection of interchangeable building blocks. You can, largely, hot swap features between all of the "5e" systems freely. And you can take what you like from each.

I can use character stuff from TOV, a monster manual from MCDM, spells from Level Up, and magic items from Mage Hand Press. And it, largely, functions just fine. You can go even farther by mixing items in the same category. You have even more freedom on the DM side, as the players largely don't interact with that side.

It can kinda be a build your own system, in a way. I think that is 5e's greatest strength. It's the modularity that WotC talking about during DnDNext but just not their doing.

Hasn't this been the case since 3e... actually didn't other companies publish compatible game products with 1e and 2e? Of course no one claimed during any of this time that 1e, 2e, 3e, 3.5, etc. weren't D&D and weren't owned by TSR and/or WotC.

That is weird...Who was insistent on the idea that 5e and WotC are... synonyms??
someone insisted that D&D and 5e are synonyms

D&D 5e is owned by WotC. It's not an opinion, it's a fact. You do not play 5e you play Level Up... correct? So shouldn't you be championing for LU to either stick to the 5e 2014 rules or create a new game?
I didn't specify the rules only, I specified 5e which includes IP as well...
I was pretty clear... otherwise I would be asking if he liked the multitude of games based on the D&D 5e rules set.

You have been claiming that 5e means WotC's game and nothing else.
Which is not the same as claiming 5e and WotC are synonyms... but yes I have claimed that 5e in the context we have been discussing it equates to D&D 5th edition.... which is owned by WotC... as far as them being synonyms, I've never claimed 5e owns 5e or D&D was produced by 5e or any other way one would use a synonym of WotC.
