How Dangerous ARE the Outer Planes?

My only comment is that if your using the Fiend Folio, which is packed with outerplanar monsters, is that the CR's on many of them seem a bit low. Maybe they figured the parties would be a bit more powerful if they were plane traveling?

This is just a quandary on how dangerous (daunting?) other DMs make extraplaner encounters.
For my game, the answer is: Deadly. Very. The Lower Planes are for high-level adventuring only - 10th level would be the absolute minimum I'd consider for the PCs to go such areas.

But, that's just my game.

Fiends and planar creatures don't always work alone :)

Sure, they may meet a tanar'ri who is CR 8. But what if he's got 5 friends with him? :)

The Outer Planes are wicked deadly, I woudl be relaly careful, idk if I'd even let 10th lvs in there I'd wait till about 15th at bare minimum
(Neverwinter Nights didn't let you go there until epic level...of coures it WAS the 8TH hell, but still...)

The outer planes are incredibly deadly. Planescape killed Spelljammer. How much deadlier can you get? ;)

Seriously, though. IMC, I use only the Far Realm and prime. So you can imagine how deadly the outer plane is. Just going outside the limits of reality results in permanent insanity. 30 seconds means being devoured or possessed by someTHING from beyond imagination.

And I've seen PCs who were willing to risk it. :]

Depends on the plane. The upper planes are largely benign, but still have minor dangers, and are dangerous if you go looking for trouble most certainly. Limbo you're likely to drown/petrify/boil/roast just from the environment, to say nothing of hungry slaadi. Mechanus has modrons that may march over you uncaringly simply because avoiding you wasn't one of their daily orders. The lower planes are, in a word, hellish.

My storyhour has been steadily building up towards open warfare on Oinos, the first layer of the Gray Waste. When I get to that in the next update or two, I'll be detailing a portion of it from the perspective of a mortal mercenary in the Blood War. Nothing mortal survives the War Eternal intact and unchanged, usually for the worse.

I generally keep 'em dangerous only if the group is careless. On most Layer 1 areas, they're not actively dangerous. Just don't annoy anyone and you should be fine.

The interesting thing is (as Planescape pointed out), primes are ignorant and unwise, but tend to also be some of the more powerful mortals on the planes. So generally planars tend to be a little bit cautious around 'em.
