How dark is magical darkness?

Sonic?

In some really crazy justification, you could say that is why there is lightning and thunder...the thunder is the sonic counteraction against the electricity. Otherwise the sky would be full of electrical discharges that don't dissipate. The sonic, as anti-energy, removes the lightning. Total BS, of course, but I'm trying here.

And, before you ask, the opposite of acid is more acid :)

Protricity. :)

In this world, if a proton imbalance is created between two ends of a rubber wire, protons flow steadily along the wire, in a transfer of energy known as protricity.

Touching a protrical wire (one that is not safely sheathed in insulating copper) can cause the subject to be afflicted with a protrical jolt. This jolt causes randomised cellular shutdown, thus dealing protrical damage, and in large enough doses has the side-effect of relaxing the subject's nerves and muscles, resulting in secondary effects ranging from embarrasing bowel loosening up to paralysis or coma.

Because protricity travels at a relatively ponderous speed, most magical protrical effects take the form of missiles or static effects rather than instantaneous lines. Protrical spells tend to counterspell electrical spells of the same level, so that for instance, the 3rd-level Parabellum's Protonic Projectiles can be used to counterspell lightning bolt.

So.....if I cast a sonic spell, would that negate a Wall of Lightning?

Not by RAW, of course, but.....would such a thing make sense?

Acid.

Electricity is Air-aligned. The Plane of Air is ever in opposition to the Plane of Earth, whence Acid comes.

Oooo...good answer, good answer.

Survey says?

....well, I kept thinking "Magnetism".

Acid is just an expression of Entropy....again, outside of RAW WotC dogma. ;)

But isn't Sonic also air-aligned? I've tried doing energy-type / element equivalencies before, for a custom PrC, and it tends to not quite fit, not least because there are too many energy types.

And too many elemental types to fit them in, or not enough, depending of POV.

I don't think sonic is element aligned.

Isn't cold used for a variety of both air and water mephits?

No one has brought this up yet, and I wanted to mention it. The 3.5 version of darkness has not clarified how the spell works. In fact, it has become more confusing and paradoxical. The spell states that all creatures in the area gain concealment (20% miss chance). This implies you can still see them in normal light, but that they are partially obscured. However, later the spell clearly states that normal lights are incapable of brightening the area. Since it does not elaborate on what it means to "brighten" an area, we have to take it at face value and assume normal light does not penetrate the darkness. Hence, we cannot see through a darkness spell unless there is an abnormal light source (i.e. probably referring to magic). But this contradicts the earlier claim that creatures merely gain concealment.

I won't even mention the ridiculous paradox that is "shadowy illumination."

I use the 3.0 version of darkness.
