When you first became interested in RPGs, what was it that catpured your attention?

For me , to be honest, was the AD&D PHB cover with the thieves trying to get the gem out of the statues eye. That cover just oozed adventure.

I was already a minatures enthusiast (okay toy soldier nut) and a war gamer who played avalon hill wargames. I'd sat in on some microarmor games and fiddled about with other miniatures. One day at the hobby shop I spotted some dwarf and goblin miniatures with a mention that they were useable with such games as "Dungeons and Dragons" . I vaguely recalled some of the older wargamers mentionign this game, I spotted the original basic set read the back of the box figured I'd give it a shot. so I bought 2 packs each of goblins and dwarves (figuring I'd need more if i liekd the game but I could experiment with learning the rules with that many) and headed home.

I was totally amazed by what was in the box and I've been a D&D enthusiast for almost 30 years now.

I read about D&D and found out that it was a fantasy adventure game played mostly in your imagination. That was enough for me to be hooked.

When I was a kid and my family moved to a new state, my first friend was an avid wargamer who got me into the hobby. I had recently discovered the Lord of the Rings books, and my Dad saw the D&D boxed set and figured that might make a good Christmas present as it seemingly combined the two interests.

I loved the LotR books, and the Hobbit, and then was asked to sit in a game with my best friend's older brother: The Village of Hommlet!

It was this:

The cover of a D&D Basic Set box available circa 1989. I was big into classic fantasy Nintendo games such as The Legend of Zelda and Dragon Warrior at the time, and was naturaly attracted to this game when I noticed it at a Toys r Us. I remain a D&D gamer to this day.

It was early 1978, just after the cartoon version of "The Hobbit" had been on TV. I was already into Avalon Hill war games and I thought of myself as a brainy strategy gamer at the age of 11.

One day news spread that another boy, Mike, had gotten this cool new game. That afternoon we all descended on his house to play B1: Adventures into the Unknown. I DMed for a couple of years and left when I thought the rules were getting in the way of fun.
