How do I let the players survive this? (Not that I have to!!)

If anything can go wrong, it wall part #1,528,168

A Lvl 3 party is under the twisted tower in Shawdodale. They've
been exploring the tunnels and know the tower was drow fortress a long time ago.

So far so good, they're infiltrating the place being very careful. They encounter quaggoths, mongrelmen, gibberlings. Some of these monsters are using the drow poison on their weapons... so chances are good that some drows are in there somewhere. Now, they found a piece of paper on a mongrelmen saying
"2 then 1"

They finally arrive at a place where there's a chasm 80 feet long and what seems to be a bridge on the other side in the "up" position. There's also an instrument to blow in on their side.
Without thinking much, one of the PCs take the instument and blows 4 times. Naturally, mogrelmen on the other side start firing at them from arrow slits. They retreat.

One of them figures out the message and they decide to wait a few hours and go back and blow "2, then 1" We stopped there.

Inside, there's 4 mongrelmen, 4 quaggoths and 6 drows in various areas. The PCs had complete surprise and it could have worked. Now, they know there are some intruders and can't run away because they'll have to lower the bridge to exit.

What they are doing there? This is a preliminary step to an invasion of the tower itself by the drows. They are creating gibberlings from dwarven slaves and send them out on the surface to wreak havoc and enslaving humans. They still have many dwarf slaves including woman and children.

My question: From the moment the PCs blew the horn 4 times, what steps they are taking?

Darn it those pesky kids keep ringing the doorbell and running away! Grrr...

Seriously, if nothing happens for a few days, things should return to normal. It's rough maintaining a level of high security. You can't take a leak without someone covering for you. You gotta check in, check out, check each other out to make sure they ain't sneaky good-fer-nothins-in-disguise. Because of budget cuts, we ain't got enough guards, so that means double shifts. You get the idea, it's a pain in the backside staying on high alert.

If you want your party to survive, suggest they go away for a few days. Sure, the area they just cleared will be repopulated somewhat, but probably not to the degree they first encountered.

Mind you, there might be something left behind to get those kids but good next time they try sneaking up to ring the doorbell again, MUHAHAHAHA!!!

Cheers,
Vurt

Or, to take an easy out, you may just want to have one of the drow's escaped slaves arrive, and show the characters the location of the secret back door entrance.
