How do Pallies Defend?

So if the opponent shifts, which does not provoke and attack of opportunity, the fighter makes a basic attack but in unable to stop the enemy from using its standard action to move again.

More importantly the enemy gets hit but still ends his move an extra space away from the fighter.

I'm generally more impressed with the battlefield control of the fighter too, but the paladin seems a bit harder to kill and has some extra utility.

The Justiciar, a paladin paragon path, has some examples of other ways a paladin defends.

In general, a paladin seems to use divine power to punish those who refuse to fight him, or to shield allies from harm.
