Throw extremely inclement weather at them, complete with a windy thunderstorm - and lightning bolts that set the forest ablaze.
I really like that idea. And the DMG has information on each terrain type and ideas for bad conditions that can happen.

Maybe you could also tie it into a roleplaying situation. Some Druid-gone-bad (Blighter?) is trying to do some bad stuff to a forest.

Reminds me of an old 1st level DUngeon Mag adventure...

The party had to have at least one druid, as this adventure would provide them with their own glade later on.

Basic story: A wizard was passing though the land one day when he attracted the attention of pixies. They did their usual gags, so to get even he left them a Well of Worlds... without directions. :)

Now the land has a reputation for strange going-on, including sudden rampage of a pair of purple worms, for no good reason. Now the pixies are acting funny, and the party needs to find out why.

The reason: a biker came out of the well of worlds! Now pixies are riding pigs (hogs) with baby chickens (chicks), wearing pots on their heads, rolling balls around in a pond (playing pool), and fighting each other with folding wooden swords ("switch" blades). Why? To make the biker feel at home, of course.

SO now the party has to find a way to get the biker home. It included finding an intelligent owl (after rerouting a stream that had been cursed. Any who drank from it spoke jibberish), getting some phase spider webbing without getting killed (one just happened to be nearby), and convincing the biker to put on the oil created from the webbing.

Druids response to the biker and the oil: Well.... She was a Swan May with a high Charisma, and it's not like he'd stcik around long enough to go through with anything... :)

Published as a silly adventure, but it was great none-the-less!
