How do you create an awakened animal?

I cannot find the rules on awakened animals. Is it a template? a spell? What book is it in?

Help. I am losing my mind.

For 3.5E it's in the PHB p202. The spell is called Awaken (Drd5).

Note that according to the spell description, an awakened animal can't serve as an animal companion, familiar, or special mount.

The exact details for constructing an awakened animal can be quite tricky, and the spell description doesn't give much in terms of guidelines. Check the Awakened Animals thread in my sig.
