How do you design a spell that covers the land in darkness?

I'm reading an old fantasy novel where the world is slowing being covered in darkness and continual winter. I would like to create something like this in my campaign. How would you do this as an epic lvl spell, a ritual,or an artifact. I guess the easist way would be to just write it off as a plot device, but I want some kind of mechanic. I just thought I would ask. Thanks.

Why do just one?

Create an Epic Spell and turn it into a Ritual.

Make the use of a specific artifact during the Epic Ritual for the spell to work.

or be reversed.

Whoops? that wasn't written in the sidebar of the Epic Ritual Text? well, better get moving and find that artifact and do the ritual all over again, time is running out...

Iron Tower Trilogy?

Yep it's the Iron Tower Trilogy. I read alot of reviews that bashed it because of the Tolkien influence (I remember reading Tolkien Lite) but I like it. I only read the first book. I just bought the trilogy at a used bookstore and came across the idea. Maybe Midnight is already like this?

I also like the series. And you can find Tolkien influences anywhere, so they can bash all they want... it's still a good series.

I seem to recall it being an artifact in the Iron Tower... that gets destroyed in the end. Sorry to wreak the ending ;)

And I would keep it to a dusk or moonlight level, or you are just going to see low-light or dark vision races being picked by your characters.

I am going to set the light lvl to moonlight so everybody can play but demihumans get an advantage. I think I will make it an artifact and thanks for the reading suggestions.

Plot device.

It Just Works.

I like having explanations in my games. If a player says, 'I want to do what the legendary heros/villans of old did', then I like to be able to say 'sure, this is how you'd go about it'.

Having said that, unless the players are epic level spellcasters, you can effectively just say 'it happens', and tell them it was an epic spell.
