How do you do training?

I have just started a campaign under 3.5 rules. I have run many D&D campaigns (w/various house rules) but never have I felt I got the rules for training to a new lvl right.

I have done or played under both extremes and everything in between. No training seems silly to me...more like a video game where POOF you become the next lvl and pick you new feats and skills. On the other end I don't want to cripple the party with unreasonable time contraints or monetary costs.

I would like to find a logical rule(s) for training which both make sense and doesn't make the players hate me. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Rule that each adventure takes X months (3, 6, 12 your call) the time not actually used 'in the dungeon' as it were was used for training.
Thats it all done, at 3 months per adventure thats 4 adventures per year and the rest is training time etc...

I don't use training for leveling, I simply assume that the character are spending at least an hour a day training their next move and such. I allow training at academy or with a mentor but the rate at which they gain XP is much slower than by adventuring. For example if a figther wants to take a level of wizard he must first learn with a mentor or teacher the basic of magic for 1-3 years (depending on his intelligence) he can then stay another year or two at the academy and earns his first level or go adventuring and earn it in a few days/week/months depending on the pace of the campaign.

There is nothing better than field experience to improve.
