How do you handle "farming" in your games?

Does anyone know of a good source for how farming is handled for DND or RPGs in general?

I am DMing a game and have created a small monastery where the inhabitants grow their own food. However, I have no idea what that means: how often do they harvest, plant, what do they do to tend their food, etc.

Any information on this would be helpful, thanks!

Basicly I wound just skip over the details. Just say that the monstery makes enougth food to support themselves and how ever much extra you want them to make. In my experince reasonable players won't go into to much detail asking about such a small fact as this. But you will know your players better then I would so if you think the details would matter to them then listen to someone else.

Thanks for the info so far guys!

The reason I am asking is because last session, I was telling my player that part of her daily chores at the monastery consisted of cleaning, basic upkeep, and taking care of the "farm".

I wanted a sense of "realsim", so while I was saying this to her, I realized that crops don't grow "overnight". Then she asked me if she had to go and harvest the crops, and then I said no, mostly because I had no idea, heh.

Plus, she is into gardening and has somewhat of a "green thumb", and I think she may enjoy roleplaying some "farming".

Heh, maybe I will may an encounter where some giant bugs threaten her garden and she has to fight them off. Or maybe a purple worm pops up one day under her garden and leaves a hole for her to explore. Hehe.

In that case, I would second the recommendation for Magical Medieval Society. The book includes a listing of what tasks are done, by month, to give you an idea of the life-cycle of a medieval farming community.

(shakes head in disbelief at own preconceptions)

When I saw the topic, I could have sworn you were having a problem with your players going to a certain monster-heavy area and setting up on a standard ambush point.

In other words, "farming" as done in an MMORPG.

The sad thing is, I haven't played EQ for two years now.
