Yes, but you must inflict non-subdual damage (i.e., fire or acid for a troll) in order to complete a coup de grace (action description).

you have the high level rogue use a vial of alchemist fire... mmm... sneak attack dice = good :D

Considering how Poly doesn't give the Su or Ex qualities, how is a troll getting half elemental due to the spell?

Magical experiments. This is exactly the type of thing I would expect to see inside the home of Szass Tam.

I figure there's also some stuff in there to cure Undead Baldness, Undead Inverility, and probably some Vampire Concubines...

Oh, wait, I'm thinking of the Lich behind *OUR* medical copanies and secret societies. :D

Wrong. According to the MM, if you inflict enough subdual damage on a creature with regeneration to knock it out (by giving it more subdual damage than it has hit points), then a coup de grace can kill it.

I see the confusion, however, seeing as the DMG directly contradicts this.

Since the MM was printed AFTER the DMG, the rules about monsters in the MM supercede those found in the DMG. Who knows? Personally, I think regenration is way too powerful without allowing the coup de grace kill. Even little imps are extremely powerful and almost unbeatable if you don't allow the coup de grace kill.

It'd be a lot cooler if Regen took a little longer to, y'know, get them back together.

I realize it's COOL to see a Troll in sludge form meld back together, but seriously, if I hit the sucker with a Maxed Cone of Cold, he needs to STAY DOWN for a few hours.

No. You are wrong.

Wow. kreynolds is agreeing with me? ;)

kreynolds
The attack cannot be of a type that automatically converts to subdual damage.

That's why I qualified my statement with "action description" instead of "abilty description." Regeneration says a successful CDG will convert all subdual damage already dealt into real damage said:

Unfortunately, that doesn't work. :( CDG says you need a melee weapon, a bow, or a crossbow. It is possible they didn't mean to eliminate the other types of weapons, but by the rules, you can't do it. Heck, you can't even CDG with a pistol. :p

Still, I'd say a plurality of DMs would allow it.
