I like my elves like I like my dwarves... as NPCs.

They are mysterious supernatural beings that can be petty in regards to jealously, materialism. Very capricious... helpful one minute, deadly the next.

I don't like the 'mystical' elves. I like the woodsy, savage headhunter-type elves.

I alow 3 types of elves in my world
1 most common-pretty much traditional D&D wood elves
2 next most common Wild elves,inspired by War Hammer RPG,mostly barbarians
3 Least common-your fairly run of the mill High Elves/D&D style

Thinking about it, more, I'd say I like my elves as monsters, rather than characters.

I like different type of elves from the wild elves who will put you in their cooking pot and eat you to high elves who have a rigid class society based on Feudal Japan.

Sometimes I want more Tolkien type elves and other types scary elves from the Sidhe courts.

Really depends on the setting and what niche I need them to fill. This is the same with all the races.
