How do you play YOUR monsters?

One thing about 'animal' type creatures (including things like ghouls) - they will typically concentrate on killing & eating their prey, rather than winning the battle - they hunt rather than fight. Such creatures will finish off downed PCs & drag them away, they often kill PCs but rarely TPK.

"Animal" was just an example of a creature of a creature of 1-2 INT. With all creatures, they use their descretion when engaging the party, though they often underestimate the power of "class levels." :D

A hungry pack of twelve wolves would probably attack a party of four lvl10 characters, regardless of level (though I would just say, "you fought off twelve wolves before getting back to town" rather than running the actual combat at that point).

your low intelligence animals arent anywhere near what I use....many animals arent smart but use really good tactics in the real world....observe a pack of wolves on national geographic and tell me they dont have good tactics, but its not just wolves , most predatory animals will have sound hunting tactics...better than those of most human hunters.....

by the way 3-4 is beyond the intelligence level of animals...even smart animals fall into the 2 intelligence category with dumb animals a 1 and animals like spiders and bugs without and INT all together

I generally run them by intelligence. It comes out close to the initial list in the top post, but I don't use hard rules for it (I play it by ear). The caveat here is that one does not need to be extremely intelligent to be tactically effective. Lots on unintelligent fighters are fairly competent when it comes to the battlefield.

I would also like to point out the animals who are pack hunters should generally use flanking regardless of intelligence. Lions, wolves, and other hunters regularly use flanking to their advantage in the real world. I see no reason to disallow them to act "realisticly" in game because of their intelligence score.

Take note of the last paragraph of my post. The Pack Hunter clause applies to a crapload of animals; again I was only using them as an example. I play things by ear, but it's nice to have something to fall back on when planning combat encounters and seeing how it should play out.

Yeah, Smart (er) Animal was a bad idea, but I couln't think of something of the top of my head that has an INT of that range other than an advanced animals (extra hit dice, third party templates, dumb familiars).

You don't have to be smart to be tactically effective. That's what STR, DEX, and CON is for :) . But a low INT fighter typically isn't a planner and stratigist; he's a soldier. He knows his combat tricks here and there, vis a vis learning, but ultimately doesn't come close to the ranks of... ummm... Confucious?

I hate talking myself into a corner :heh:. But you get the point, right?

I look at Int and Wis. Are they smart enough to plan or know when to run? Are they cunning enough to dup people? Int is not enough for me. Wisdom is important also.

I think as a result of the game having monsters as combat fodder a major 'mistake' of most Dms is that most creatures, and low int ones in particular, will NOT keep attacking if the prey is fighting back and winning.

So the statement
Int 1-2: Dumb animal. Attacks the closest target, or the target that hit it hardest last round. If it has multiple attacks, it spreads it out among all targets. Does not utilize 5' step, does not intentionally flank, provokes AoOs withdrawing, but usually withdraws too late. Does not utilize stealth techniques or ambushes.
-Example: Animals

should NOT apply. Since imho an int 1-2 creature will not attack the one who hit it hardest last round - it will try and escape as soon as possible, striking out at anything that gets in its way (ie tactically it will be fighting defensively and trying to retreat).

Hunters in particular generally aren't there for a fight - and so they are not going to attack if it looks as if the prey is able to fight back and if it does they wont stick around

Also the point about pack hunters using flanking and ambush as part of their natural tactics has already been made.

Personally I play monsters on the basis that self preservation is paramount - so I set a Break level HP% eg a creature out hunting will break and flee if it gets to 90% of its max HP, a starving rogue lion might go to 75% of HP, a creature fighting its mortal enemy might go to 50% , a mother protecting her young will go down to 25% max HP but very few creatures will allow themselves to go below 20% max without at least attempting to escape

Int 0 creatures might attack the nearest thing and not stop (but even then) and its intelligent creatures (ie 3 - 10) who are most likely to make bad strategic moves like remain fighting even though they are clearly outclassed, make dumb mistakes and draw AoO and advertise themselves when they are suppose to be in ambush

However anything with Int 5+ should be considered able to work out how to preserve themselves and beat up the other guy safely

At last someone else who can use kobolds to scare would be heros.
Make it three. The last time my players came up against Kobolds, it was a TPK, soley because I played the Kobolds as the sneaky ambushers they are.

I try to get into the critter's head and do what seems right based on what I know from my rudimentary studies of animal behavior and watching lots of documentaries. Wolves pack up and run down, crocs lie in wait to ambush, cats pounce and run, and great apes bluff to try to intimidate.
For non-mundane critters, I try to base them on some variation of a realistic critter and then push it based on their differences.
