I've always pronounced it "cha-LOO-kuh-koo" because I've heard that, if pronounced correctly, there's some chance it may appear...

It's pronounced Kool-Aid
Lovecraft was way ahead of his time and actually predicted an otherworldly alien life form that looked like a giant pitcher of disgustingly sweet red liquid. To protect that sanity of those around him, he made the word to look unpronounceable and changed the image to that of a giant squid type creature.
