How Do You Run a Doppleganger?

I am amazed when a player can handle the doppleganger of their character, particularly if the switch included the death of that character. Three weeks as the bard has got to be a record.

Umbran, ExploderWizard: Don't forget that the doppleganger can get the password from the guy asking for the password, too. Surely the asker is thinking of the password he is expecting to hear.

In our Age of Worms campaign I just had the player continue to play his character without telling him he'd been replaced by a doppleganger. It helped that it was a Fighter and not a spellcaster.

Had it gone on for a long period of time I would have started to drop subtle hints that something wasn't right but it was short lived so I didn't have to.

It made for a good battle when the real PC finally met up with the doppleganger... the player was so confused that he fought the entire battle (playing both himself and the doppleganger) without realizing which was the real PC.

Get a player to do it. In an older edition game, I had a player of a greater dopplegamger wipe out almost the entire party by taking a victim and then adding that player and character to the deception. One fell after another. It was all the players. It was dark, but memorable.
