How do you scare your PCs?

Two things always worked...

1) When the players asked 'what kind of adventure are we on today?', I'd answer 'I dunno, guess you'll have to find out.'

2) Always having little things appear, move be out of place. MInor stuff like windows, bottles, or papers. Things the characters knew should not have been moved. The usual BBEG's were smart enough to not make those mistakes, so the players had the sense of being toyed with...


In a homebrew campaign a friend of mine created, the main BBEG's were a class of assassin called stalkers. They wore a distinctive red monocle with magical detection abilities. The whole party nearly *%&^ their pants when he mentioned a 'glowing red eye shaped light hovering in the darkness...'. :)
