Films/programmes sometimes show it blue to yellow/white (Predator, nature programmes with pit vipers) Drizzt books/Liriel books also imply this.
Actual cameras show it grey to white.
Using it as infravision is not that different from the way the DMG describes it. In Daughter of the Drow (Elaine Cunningham book) there are magic inks which radiate heat. Problem solved.
Or, you could use radarvision a la bat sonar. Pick one that suits you best. No requirement for them to Be the same as long as they Do the same thing.
