How do you whip a group into shape?

Whenever the players i had, had full access to the rules i wouldnt let them use abilities unless they knew how they worked or try things unless they knew how they worked.
Kind of a dont ask me how it works, tell me how it works (when most of the time i already know. It just makes them learn the rules).

And i hand out extra XP to players for teaching newbies the ropes, or explaining a rule to another player. This is also handy in getting them to learn the rules if they think they can at some point get XP out of it.

How did we activate a 4 year old post?! Ah well ... it's stil la good topic.

1) When a player asks "how do I bull rush/grapple/activate a wand with Use Magic Device", or anything similar in the Player's Handbook, reply "good question - look it up and tell me how it works".

2) When there is a rule question, review it the beginning of next session.
It is a good topic.

I agree with item 1. People generally learn by doing better than by being told how to do. I've certainly learned the rules better since I started reading the books and trying to apply them to the game myself, rather than letting the GM or other players tell me how things work.
