I guess I don't see the difficulty with this situation whatsoever, in terms of rules that is.

In retrospect, they're pretty much the same thing -- the second poster just did a better job of expressing the idea. That said, either way, the propsed solution isn't RAW -- it requires working outside of the RAW (excepting Rule 0), which is what I envision some players having issues with.

I wouldn't call that 'working outside the RAW'. If you have players that actually think that beams would need to be five feet wide or something because of the way the battlemat is done .. well, I have no answer for that except the application of violence. If they bitch about it, tell them that's why they have a GM instead of a Choose Your Adventure book.
