How does a player go about starting a Wizard's Guild?

If you're getting cohorts and followers from the Leadership feat, remember that in the RAW, your followers only have levels in NPC classes. So, all of those first level followers can be, at best, adepts.

Not necessarily true.

The character can lead up to the indicated number of characters of each level. Followers are similar to cohorts, except they’re generally low-level NPCs. Because they’re generally five or more levels behind the character they follow, they’re rarely effective in combat.

In 3.0, the followers were NPC classes.

This is not the case in 3.5.

Hrm...I'm sure there's a reference somewhere in the 3.5 DMG. But, I suppose, it may be merely hallucination.

As to the issue of having followers level up, I tend to explain the addition of higher level followers as having the lower-level followers level up, and then attracting more lower level followers to fill in the rest of the numbers. You'll have a few students that will take forever to level, some that level up all the way to what? Level 7?

First is a gathering, this is normally the henchmen of the Wizard and other followers that are of the same mindset. The gathering then becomes a Cabal or a Society; this is where the members attract the notice of patrons and are seen as an orginzation with strong community service and respect. It is then they apply for guild standing in that community, the community leaders vote on it and with money in the right pockets they become a guild. As a guild they get to regulate fees and prices, pool resourses, tax breaks, seats in town/city councils.

When they expand to other cities, basicly franchizing, they can become a college. :D

Think about orginzation: Guild Council member, guild leaders, guild department heads, guild members.
