How does one get into publishing?

I have a really good idea for a sci-fi setting, but I am one person, who lacks funds, and I am wondering how to get started on the path to someday perhaps publish this setting for d20 and the OGL/OGC and have the rest of you see it. So, how does one get started in this type of business?

Any help would be great.

What I would try is to contact various Publishers and propose the idea to them. Most of them have some kind of guidelines for this type of thing on their sites.

Would add that you should steer more toward publishers who seem to have a sci-fi bend, but haven't produced their own setting yet. I'm pretty sure publishers aren't looking for settings, especially from someone who has not contributed to the d20 field.

Saying that, I'd try to get my feet wet by contributing here and there to many different d20 (and other?) companies to try and make a name for yourself. Keep bringing up your cool, hip sci-fi setting in conversation, but don't expect anything over night. Maybe, one day, we'll see it after all. It's going to take hard work, late nights, and strength of character. Good luck!
