How easy is it to SELL magic items in your game?

assuming they can reach a city or large town, most items can be sold at 1/2 price
In small towns there is an occasional market for items higher than the gp limit.
sought after items tend to go for 60-70% of value (stat boosters, rings of protection, wands of cure light wounds)

Crap items: +1 clubs, +1 bracers of defense scale mail, shortbows(no str), only go for 40% of value

Occasionally PCs with known crafting abilities are approached by NPCs looking for custom items.
these sell for full price.

It depends what the item is. For common things it is sell and forget. Other items though it can matter where they go. I usually try to make selling magical items a little more involved though.

Sell a magic item? Go find a dragon. Make sure it's of the metallic variety. Metallic dragons, particular golds and silvers in my world, build their hordes by trading in magic items. However, be warned that the bargaining terms can be rather draconic.

In my current campaign, I've decided that--in general--there isn't a market for magic items. You might be able to sell it for a bit of a premium over an equivalent mundane item.

Special cases--as always--are possible, however.

In my games, at least, selling loot is what the characters do for a living. So unless I've got a specific adventure hook in mind, it all happens "off screen" at a flat 50% rate. The only restriction I place is that they need to be able to devote a sufficient amount of time to the activity.

If they can't sell quickly it's because there's no customer, how can they have a better time rising the price?

Sooner or later, they'll get some adventuring party looking for kit. Especially in a metropolis!

Not running a game atm, but when I do I don't expect it to be pretty difficult. I'd like to run an Eberron campaign next. Though magic is common, magic and wondrous items are not as much. Most magic items come from archaeological digs and trips to Xendrik, or have valuable pieces of their function (dragonshards). Even minor magic would garner some interest. So while I doubt anyone could just walk in and schloff off unwanted magic items on any random vendor, I also don't think interested buyers would be hard to find.

If you think owning a shop in a magical metropolis means you get to keep full price on what you sell... well, there are some guilds who would like to chat with you about that. Possibly in Cant.

I use the GP limit guidelines.
Also the players only get 50% value unless it is a wanted/needed item. Normally less.
I try to keep shopping to a minimum if I can. My group would rather do something else.
We will play it out sometimes if it is a unique item they have.

I used the gp limit/population guidelines with ho problem. Sell at half value, buy at full, modified by Appraise and Diplomacy.

Verisimilitude or market economics? I couldn't have cared less. Back to the dungeon, lads!
