how have you amassed your D&D mini collection?

A lot of boosters from my FLGS, and a few singles from the same source. (I'll point out that my FLGS discounts quite a bit, and more for me).

I still have only a few (about 6) Aberrations boosters - I'm paying off several debts at the moment. :(

http://www.maxminis.com/ is the main trading site; it also has links to online retailers (see the Marketplace forum).

Cheers!

I try to buy singles of the ones I really want. Every once in awhile I will buy a pack but not since GenCon where I pretty much bought every single I realy wanted (that was within my price range). I do love those big guys but won't pay more than a few bucks since I am just using them as minis for my RPG.

I've got a couple by buying some boosters with friends and I always get duplicates which kinda bugs me :) But that's the way WOTC set up the minis...so then I try and trade which does work that much for me.

I have a profile on maxminis (?) dot com but I've only gotten ONE e-mail for a trade. So it brings me back to Ebay! There was a dealer at GenCon that was selling singles for cheap but alas I was kinda broke or I would have picked up a few more rares I needed. I have complete Dragonseye and Aberrations set and I'm missing one rare from Giants of Legend.

You have to be outgoing and persistent, if you don't have a whole lot of minis for trade. You need to initiate offers and keep initiating offers, it may take awhile but eventually you will get your trade.

Also, its really difficult to trade Uncommons and Commons. Generally you need to trade a Rare away and then see if the guy wants to include some Uncommons or Commons with the trade.

My strategy is to look at the set list. Figure out the unique number of Rares I want out of that set, buy that amnt of boosters. Trade the Rares I don't want for Rares I do and buy duplicate Rares on ebay. So far this strategy has worked fairly well. This assumes that you want a fair number of the Commons and Uncommons in the set.

People who buy cases: do you notice any distribution trend? I mean, do you tend to get a lot of dupes in a case or do they take pains to keep the rares spread out?

I buy 1 case from gameoutfitter.com for each set. My wife and I find the distribution super; we miss between 2 to 10 from each series just from getting a case. Then we fill in the rest trading with friends and Ebay purchases for singles missing or wanted dupes.

I was pre-ordering 1 case from gameoutfitter for each set, but after getting crappy rares in aberrations (which, IMO is the worst set out there), I've decided not to do that anymore. I'm pretty much done with random, though I may make an exception when they release the next huge pack in 2006.

Best bet is to buy the uncommons and commons you want on e-bay since you can get them in bunches extremely cheap.

I was happy with popularcollections.com for single rares (that they had in stock). FRP games also has singles, but they're pricey. As Merric mentioned, there is a listing at maxminis.com for other web locations to buy singles.
