How have you used Hero points?

I've used AU Hero points, and I've used standard UA/Eberron/d20 Modern Action points, and I've used boosted UA/Eberron/d20 Modern Action points. I like 'em. I'll probably always house rule in some variant of this going forward. I really like what they add to the game.

In 2E I used something I called a "coup de grace" which basically allowed each player one "automatic success" per game session. It put "randomness" a little less in charge of the story and allowed the players to decide when a climactic moment should occur.

In AU I use hero points basically as written.

I'm in an Eberron game where we use action points as written.

And I'm in a Greyhawk game where we use "fate points" which are used to save us from certain death.

Beale Knight brought AU's system to our table. We modified it a little, just to restrict the # of points.

They have been used very little, but mostly because folks forget. BK has taken to setting out a small folded notecard in front of him during combat. It looks like a place marker for a dinner and reads "Action points".

Great little reminder. :)

When I was a player in Siege of Ebonring Keep (we finished it...long adventure), we used the Hero Points there.

In my game, I do a mix of Action Points/Dork 20 and some other stuff.

Back in 2nd ed, we had Fate Points, taken right from Warhammer FRPG, which basically saves you from death.

I use them in my AU games. They allow me to challenge the players with a tougher situation (when they have enough) to ratchet up the tension level. What I like about them is that they put some control back into the player's hands when their character might get hosed by bad dice luck. A memorable usage this weekend came when I allowed a PC to expend one to subtract a d20 from an enemy's save. The wraith would have made it's save but for that, and it turned the tide of battle early.

The biggest problem now is that my player's complain when they don't have any because they love using them!

I like the UA action point system -- you can do some neat stuff you can't normally do with them, but they won't save your bacon, and they don't act like "extra lives" -- I'm not big on the special points in that regard.

I still have a fondness for swashbuckling cards, though I haven't used them recently. (Printed them, used them, now they're in a bag somewhere, I don't know where.)
