How level loss works, or the soul vs. the spirit...

All right, this works really well for my campaign world, but your mileage my vary...

In laymens' terms, a character's soul is his basic self: Personality, Id, superego, ect... It is what he actually is when you strip everything away: Such as his mental attributes, thinking patterns, and dearest memories.
A character's spirit, on the other hand, is what the soul has learned while in a physical body. His level, skills, feats, and general memories would be here.
When a soul goes Beyond the veil (dies...) then the soul takes one level of the class that best defined him.
Whats left of the spirit goes to Death. (In my campaign, Death is not a god. While he has all of the powers of one, he has no worshippers. He gains his power by absorbing the spirits of the dead.)
When a character is brought back from the dead, not only must the soul be called back from beyond the veil, but the soul loses and levels he took (or gained?) beyond the veil.

Thus the one level loss... (this is also why In my gave, characters cannot be brought back from the dead. Dead has devoured their spirit and there is no way to call the soul back without it.)
This also explains why so many undead devour levels: They need the Spirit energy to continue to exist.

Most undead loose both the Soul, and most (if not all) of their Spirit. Exceptions abound:
Bodaks keep all of their Spirit, but loose their Soul. (this explains why they "Get lost in the moment..."
Skeletons keep none of either...

I'm sure other gamers can figure out the rest...
